Narrative:
Taxiing in, we crossed runway 9L and joined taxiway left wbound. The first officer called ground and they advised us to 'hold short of 5S.' later, a B737 crossed in front of us to taxiway M and ground told us to 'continue to the ramp.' the first officer replied, 'roger, we're going to ramp,' in an attempt to clarify the clearance. Ground was pretty busy and in retrospect may not have understood we were going to ramp. As we taxied wbound, at either 3S or 4S an rj which had apparently been wbound, and must have bypassed us on taxiway M, began to turn north to cross taxiway left into his ramp. We were in a B767-300 with our nose taxi light on. We noticed the taxi light (at about 10 O'clock) of the rj as he made his turn northbound, so we stopped. Even with the possible confusion on the ground frequency, I was surprised the rj challenged us at the intersection. I was a bit uncomfortable and continued after he cleared. We heard ground attempting to contact a commuter aircraft to no avail. If it was the rj that cut us off, he may already have been talking to ramp control.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A NIGHT OP GND CONFLICT OCCURRED WHEN A COMMUTER RJ TURNS IN FRONT OF A B767-300 ON A TXWY AT ATL.
Narrative: TAXIING IN, WE CROSSED RWY 9L AND JOINED TXWY L WBOUND. THE FO CALLED GND AND THEY ADVISED US TO 'HOLD SHORT OF 5S.' LATER, A B737 CROSSED IN FRONT OF US TO TXWY M AND GND TOLD US TO 'CONTINUE TO THE RAMP.' THE FO REPLIED, 'ROGER, WE'RE GOING TO RAMP,' IN AN ATTEMPT TO CLARIFY THE CLRNC. GND WAS PRETTY BUSY AND IN RETROSPECT MAY NOT HAVE UNDERSTOOD WE WERE GOING TO RAMP. AS WE TAXIED WBOUND, AT EITHER 3S OR 4S AN RJ WHICH HAD APPARENTLY BEEN WBOUND, AND MUST HAVE BYPASSED US ON TXWY M, BEGAN TO TURN N TO CROSS TXWY L INTO HIS RAMP. WE WERE IN A B767-300 WITH OUR NOSE TAXI LIGHT ON. WE NOTICED THE TAXI LIGHT (AT ABOUT 10 O'CLOCK) OF THE RJ AS HE MADE HIS TURN NBOUND, SO WE STOPPED. EVEN WITH THE POSSIBLE CONFUSION ON THE GND FREQ, I WAS SURPRISED THE RJ CHALLENGED US AT THE INTXN. I WAS A BIT UNCOMFORTABLE AND CONTINUED AFTER HE CLRED. WE HEARD GND ATTEMPTING TO CONTACT A COMMUTER ACFT TO NO AVAIL. IF IT WAS THE RJ THAT CUT US OFF, HE MAY ALREADY HAVE BEEN TALKING TO RAMP CTL.
