Narrative:
Night inbound to gate on ramp. 1) lineman tried to direct us without lighted wands. Someone finally ran wands out. They worked about 5 seconds then quit. Could see clearly enough for non lighted wands from there. 2) while under lineman's direction and while aircraft moving, a company belt loader raced across the ramp between the aircraft and lineman. Brought aircraft to stop, then proceeded after loader was clear. Unsatisfactory! No one should ever cross between the lineman and aircraft, let alone at night!
