Narrative:
Departure narrative says to fly runway heading until 2.5 DME clt, then left to 330 degrees, maintain 8000 ft. Pre departure clearance says hornet 1 departure naley intersection. Depicted area departure chart page 10-3A shows a dashed line (transition track) to join and continuing to naley also a dashed line to 330 degree heading and radar vector chevrons. We loaded the hornet 1 departure in the mcdu with the naley transition. This depicted straight out to jotta/naley intersection. On departure, about 3 NM from departure end, departure controller asked if we were turning left to intercept 330 degree heading. We said we were proceeding to naley transition. He said continue. Couple mins later, he queried us again why we didn't turn to 330 degree heading, and we said the departure chart was confusing (narrative said one thing and picture another). He said ok.
