Narrative:
Approximately XA30 we were cleared for takeoff without being given specific instructions like fly runway heading, fly direct bsv VOR, etc. For the prior month and a half of doing this flight we were always given specific clearance on takeoff. On this particular day another aircraft that took off before us was having a problem and had to return for immediate landing on the runway we were occupying. After takeoff the controller commented that we missed bsv VOR by 8 mi and contact ZOB. We were still on runway heading. Our clearance was cak direct bsv VOR direct aeros then ape VOR, etc. The clearance from clearance delivery was simply as filed. As stated previously every prior departure had specific takeoff clrncs usually fly runway heading. This one did not because of aircraft with problem. Note: turning direct bsv VOR after takeoff would have turned us toward the returning aircraft. In future, controller should be consistent with takeoff/departure instructions.

Title: CL65 FLC MAINTAIN RWY HEADING AFTER TKOF INSTEAD OF TURNING TO VOR AS FLT PLANNED AND FILED.
Narrative: APPROX XA30 WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF WITHOUT BEING GIVEN SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS LIKE FLY RWY HEADING, FLY DIRECT BSV VOR, ETC. FOR THE PRIOR MONTH AND A HALF OF DOING THIS FLT WE WERE ALWAYS GIVEN SPECIFIC CLRNC ON TKOF. ON THIS PARTICULAR DAY ANOTHER ACFT THAT TOOK OFF BEFORE US WAS HAVING A PROB AND HAD TO RETURN FOR IMMEDIATE LNDG ON THE RWY WE WERE OCCUPYING. AFTER TKOF THE CTLR COMMENTED THAT WE MISSED BSV VOR BY 8 MI AND CONTACT ZOB. WE WERE STILL ON RWY HEADING. OUR CLRNC WAS CAK DIRECT BSV VOR DIRECT AEROS THEN APE VOR, ETC. THE CLRNC FROM CLRNC DELIVERY WAS SIMPLY AS FILED. AS STATED PREVIOUSLY EVERY PRIOR DEP HAD SPECIFIC TKOF CLRNCS USUALLY FLY RWY HEADING. THIS ONE DID NOT BECAUSE OF ACFT WITH PROB. NOTE: TURNING DIRECT BSV VOR AFTER TKOF WOULD HAVE TURNED US TOWARD THE RETURNING ACFT. IN FUTURE, CTLR SHOULD BE CONSISTENT WITH TKOF/DEP INSTRUCTIONS.
