Narrative:
We departed with 122 passenger on board. The first officer was flying the leg, departure, en route, arrival were normal. He touched down at about 127 KTS (on speed) at about XA48. I took the brakes at the 80 KT call and the aircraft after the reversers were stowed. We were headed for gate X and I told the first officer that we would roll to the end. I noticed the 'quick sand' arresting area straight ahead and an MD80 parked at gate Y which we would turn short of in the turn. We were at taxi/turnoff speed when the first officer said that we had missed the last turnoff. We crossed the end of the runway into the overrun, stopping short of the 'quick sand.' I asked if we could turn right onto the ramp. The first officer said no. I started to go left onto a concrete pad on the northeast corner of the airport. Not certain if the pad was stressed for us, I called tower. They said to hold our position and they would send help. The superintendent of airport operations arrived and recommended tow to the gate. This we did, arriving at XA58. I spoke then with the superintendent of airport operations and the company operations supervisor. Pushed next flight with 122 passenger at XC23. We conferred on the way to sjc and I called dispatch and asked for the chief pilot on duty. Spoke with one, agreed to file reports. Spoke with another name at about AM30 the next day. Supplemental information from acn 538680: as we taxied by the turn in line for gate, I told the captain we missed the turn in. He applied brakes, but the aircraft did not stop until main mounts were 15 ft into the overrun of runway 8.
