Narrative:
Instructed to taxi taxiway a, taxiway H, taxiway Q, runway 23. Short taxi, and while making 'prepare for takeoff' PA to flight attendants, inadvertently passed the runway 23 hold line (placed at taxiway H/Q intersection and some distance from runway end) and stopped short of runway 23. We did not encroach on the runway, but did taxi past the remote hold short line -- apparently placed to permit tower viewing of runway 23 hold short traffic. Supplemental information from acn 539190: tower called and suggested the hold short line for the runway was remotely placed at the entrance to taxiway Q, so we had taxied past it while completing other duties, expecting to find the hold short line at the end of the runway. Cleveland features a similar arrangement, but a ball flag on the airport diagram notes the unusual confign. Would suggest a note in the airport page on the airport view or both.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN MD80 CREW, TAXIING FOR TKOF AT CYYZ, CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR THEIR DEP RWY.
Narrative: INSTRUCTED TO TAXI TXWY A, TXWY H, TXWY Q, RWY 23. SHORT TAXI, AND WHILE MAKING 'PREPARE FOR TKOF' PA TO FLT ATTENDANTS, INADVERTENTLY PASSED THE RWY 23 HOLD LINE (PLACED AT TXWY H/Q INTXN AND SOME DISTANCE FROM RWY END) AND STOPPED SHORT OF RWY 23. WE DID NOT ENCROACH ON THE RWY, BUT DID TAXI PAST THE REMOTE HOLD SHORT LINE -- APPARENTLY PLACED TO PERMIT TWR VIEWING OF RWY 23 HOLD SHORT TFC. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 539190: TWR CALLED AND SUGGESTED THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR THE RWY WAS REMOTELY PLACED AT THE ENTRANCE TO TXWY Q, SO WE HAD TAXIED PAST IT WHILE COMPLETING OTHER DUTIES, EXPECTING TO FIND THE HOLD SHORT LINE AT THE END OF THE RWY. CLEVELAND FEATURES A SIMILAR ARRANGEMENT, BUT A BALL FLAG ON THE ARPT DIAGRAM NOTES THE UNUSUAL CONFIGN. WOULD SUGGEST A NOTE IN THE ARPT PAGE ON THE ARPT VIEW OR BOTH.
