Narrative:
During taxi out to runway 23 at cyyz via taxiway J, I inadvertently taxied past the runway hold short line. The line is located an inordinately long distance from the runway and I mistook it for an ILS hold short line thinking there would be another line closer to the runway. I stopped as soon as I realized the error and was well short of the runway, albeit past the official hold short line. There was an aircraft on final approach to the runway (runway 23), and the tower controller, realizing we had stopped past the hold short line, queried that aircraft as to whether or not our position posed a problem. That aircraft replied that it did not. The controller then queried us as to whether or not we had any concerns with that aircraft's landing. We replied we did not, at which time the aircraft continued and landed. Although, I was thrown off guard by the unusually long distance of the hold short line from the runway, I should have recognized it as the normal hold short line, not the ILS hold short, which are normally labeled as such. I have reviewed runway and airport signage and will pay closer attention to hold short lines regardless of their distance from the runway.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN A300 CREW, TAXIING FOR TKOF AT CYYZ, CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR THEIR DEP RWY.
Narrative: DURING TAXI OUT TO RWY 23 AT CYYZ VIA TXWY J, I INADVERTENTLY TAXIED PAST THE RWY HOLD SHORT LINE. THE LINE IS LOCATED AN INORDINATELY LONG DISTANCE FROM THE RWY AND I MISTOOK IT FOR AN ILS HOLD SHORT LINE THINKING THERE WOULD BE ANOTHER LINE CLOSER TO THE RWY. I STOPPED AS SOON AS I REALIZED THE ERROR AND WAS WELL SHORT OF THE RWY, ALBEIT PAST THE OFFICIAL HOLD SHORT LINE. THERE WAS AN ACFT ON FINAL APCH TO THE RWY (RWY 23), AND THE TWR CTLR, REALIZING WE HAD STOPPED PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE, QUERIED THAT ACFT AS TO WHETHER OR NOT OUR POS POSED A PROB. THAT ACFT REPLIED THAT IT DID NOT. THE CTLR THEN QUERIED US AS TO WHETHER OR NOT WE HAD ANY CONCERNS WITH THAT ACFT'S LNDG. WE REPLIED WE DID NOT, AT WHICH TIME THE ACFT CONTINUED AND LANDED. ALTHOUGH, I WAS THROWN OFF GUARD BY THE UNUSUALLY LONG DISTANCE OF THE HOLD SHORT LINE FROM THE RWY, I SHOULD HAVE RECOGNIZED IT AS THE NORMAL HOLD SHORT LINE, NOT THE ILS HOLD SHORT, WHICH ARE NORMALLY LABELED AS SUCH. I HAVE REVIEWED RWY AND ARPT SIGNAGE AND WILL PAY CLOSER ATTN TO HOLD SHORT LINES REGARDLESS OF THEIR DISTANCE FROM THE RWY.
