Narrative:
As we approached the ykm 16 DME arc on V468 from eln, the DME broke lock. The non certified LORAN had a red accuracy warning light, but it had been agreeing with the VOR and DME for most of the flight. The trainee attempted to intercept the 16 DME arc using the LORAN. TRACON advised that we were inside the arc and we turned to the southwest to try to reintercept the arc. TRACON then advised that we were wandering around the arc. I canceled IFR and advised that we had an inoperative DME. We then were cleared direct to ykm VOR for the ILS runway 27 approach VFR. We should not have tried to save the approach with malfunctioning/uncertified equipment.

Title: DURING AN INST APCH DME ARC, PLT, WITH INSTRUCTOR, LOST USE OF THEIR DME RESULTING IN THE CTLR INTERVENING TO ALERT THEM OF NOT BEING ON THE DME ARC. PLTS CANCELED THEIR IFR CLRNC SINCE THEY WERE IN VFR CONDITIONS AND WERE THEN CLRED DIRECT TO THE VOR.
Narrative: AS WE APCHED THE YKM 16 DME ARC ON V468 FROM ELN, THE DME BROKE LOCK. THE NON CERTIFIED LORAN HAD A RED ACCURACY WARNING LIGHT, BUT IT HAD BEEN AGREEING WITH THE VOR AND DME FOR MOST OF THE FLT. THE TRAINEE ATTEMPTED TO INTERCEPT THE 16 DME ARC USING THE LORAN. TRACON ADVISED THAT WE WERE INSIDE THE ARC AND WE TURNED TO THE SW TO TRY TO REINTERCEPT THE ARC. TRACON THEN ADVISED THAT WE WERE WANDERING AROUND THE ARC. I CANCELED IFR AND ADVISED THAT WE HAD AN INOP DME. WE THEN WERE CLRED DIRECT TO YKM VOR FOR THE ILS RWY 27 APCH VFR. WE SHOULD NOT HAVE TRIED TO SAVE THE APCH WITH MALFUNCTIONING/UNCERTIFIED EQUIP.
