Narrative:
On flight lax-iad, we taxied normally down the runway. The side of the runway we taxied on was very bumpy, we all commented to each other as we were doing our security checks before takeoff. No sooner then we lifted up a loud thump took place. It was very obvious something was wrong as we were not climbing. The aircraft did not shake or lean to one side. We were over the water and we returned to lax within 10 mins. Crew and passenger knew immediately something was wrong. Cockpit crew did a wonderful job and insured the flight attendants and passenger that we would land without an emergency -- and we did just that! Non revenue flight attendant reported fire out of engine. I did not experience seeing any fire.
