Narrative:
I was cleared to taxi to runway 17 at vld. I had the airport diagram open and looked at it to plan my taxi route. However, in my head I somehow reversed the runways. I knew I was supposed to taxi to runway 17, but had planned my route to taxi to runway 35. As I approached runway 17 on taxiway M, I visually cleared the runway in both directions and continued across runway 17. The ground controller then asked if he had made a mistake and cleared me to runway 35. At this point I realized my mistake and informed the ground controller of this. The ground controller told me it was alright and that there was no traffic. I cannot explain why I confused the runways. I had been to this airport (vld) a few times the past week. I asked my first officer why she did not speak up and she said she thought we were only crossing the hold short lines for runway 22. In reality, the hold lines are for both runway 17 and runway 22. If I had discussed my planned taxi route with my first officer, this probably would not have happened.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: EMB120 CAPT CROSSED THE ACTIVE RWY TO WHICH HE WAS CLRED DURING TAXI OUT DUE TO MISTAKENLY BELIEVING THAT HE WAS CLRED TO THE OPPOSITE END OF THE RWY. TWR CTLR INTERVENED.
Narrative: I WAS CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 17 AT VLD. I HAD THE ARPT DIAGRAM OPEN AND LOOKED AT IT TO PLAN MY TAXI RTE. HOWEVER, IN MY HEAD I SOMEHOW REVERSED THE RWYS. I KNEW I WAS SUPPOSED TO TAXI TO RWY 17, BUT HAD PLANNED MY RTE TO TAXI TO RWY 35. AS I APCHED RWY 17 ON TXWY M, I VISUALLY CLRED THE RWY IN BOTH DIRECTIONS AND CONTINUED ACROSS RWY 17. THE GND CTLR THEN ASKED IF HE HAD MADE A MISTAKE AND CLRED ME TO RWY 35. AT THIS POINT I REALIZED MY MISTAKE AND INFORMED THE GND CTLR OF THIS. THE GND CTLR TOLD ME IT WAS ALRIGHT AND THAT THERE WAS NO TFC. I CANNOT EXPLAIN WHY I CONFUSED THE RWYS. I HAD BEEN TO THIS ARPT (VLD) A FEW TIMES THE PAST WK. I ASKED MY FO WHY SHE DID NOT SPEAK UP AND SHE SAID SHE THOUGHT WE WERE ONLY XING THE HOLD SHORT LINES FOR RWY 22. IN REALITY, THE HOLD LINES ARE FOR BOTH RWY 17 AND RWY 22. IF I HAD DISCUSSED MY PLANNED TAXI RTE WITH MY FO, THIS PROBABLY WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED.
