Narrative:
Aircraft called in range and reported an R4 window cracked. Contract maintenance was called and window was placed on maintenance note that the inner vinyl liner was cracked rather than the inner pane. Aircraft was dispatched on a flight to ZZZ and where maintenance said that it was the inner pane. The window was immediately changed in ZZZ. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated a contract technician was sent the paperwork to identify the cracked pane to determine if the window could be deferred. The reporter said the contract technician idented the pane as the inner vinyl pane cracked. The reporter stated the window was deferred as this pane was not structural. The reporter said the next station had company technicians and the window was checked again but this time reported the structural vinyl pane was cracked. The reporter said having inaccurate and confusing information on the window condition. The window was ordered to be replaced.
