Narrative:
We taxied out for a flight from stl to den. We were given instructions to taxi onto a runway and hold. The runway was runway 12L. We were slightly behind running checklists. I, the first officer, was running checklists. The captain began taxiing onto runway. I was distraction with checklists, ATC advised captain he was on the wrong runway (an inactive one) and should make the r-hand turn onto the assigned runway (runway 12L). It was a new airport for both of us and low visibility conditions. We taxied onto runway 12L, were given clearance for takeoff, and took off without further incident.
