Narrative:

APU inoperative/right ff indicator erratic. Right engine start at gate after additional 6-8 review. Normal pushback and left engine xbleed start. After both engines started, captain/first officer could not see mechanic or tug. Captain assumed salute/release received. First officer called for taxi clearance. Commenced taxi and inadvertently ran over tow bar/heard noise. Reset brakes. Mechanic notified captain of running over tow bar. Notified maintenance, returned to gate.
