Narrative:
The fuel control switch (engine cutoff) was missed on engine shutdown checklist. On this early morning flight from lga to dfw we had an extended time with high workload due to WX rertes. Both pilots urgently needed a restroom break after landing. We taxied to gate and went through the shutdown checklist, after blocking in and xferring to exterior electrical power. Both of us verbalized different parts of checklist. Each of us thought the other person had turned the fuel control cut-off switch to 'off.' in the process of getting out of the flight deck to use the restroom, the flight deck door automatically locked when it closed. A combination of these events disrupted our normal habit patterns. We did not realize the engine was still running till we looked back at the plane from the inside of the building. We promptly returned and shut down the engine.
