Narrative:
Right downwind for runway 21 as instructed by sdl tower. Was told by tower that traffic to follow was a gulfstream on 5 mi final. Replied: negative on that traffic, looking. Asked tower if we were #1 or #2. Tower replied traffic to follow was gulfstream off to our right. Replied I saw traffic to right, but it didn't appear to be a gulfstream (saw a citation to the right at about 2 O'clock position, turning to final). Saw gulfstream at our 10 O'clock position. Tower instructed us to break off, turn left immediately. Saw gulfstream initially turn to its right, then turn to its left away from us. Gulfstream landed, we were instructed to establish 4 mi final for runway 21, which we did. Landed without incident. TCASII would have helped. May have been factor for gulfstream. Confusion in pattern as to where we were in sequence. Should have asked controller to call our turn to base, that way no confusion over our sequence and position relative to other aircraft.

Title: BE20 PLT ON DOWNWIND LEG AT SDL HAD AN NMAC WITH A G4 RPTED BY THE TWR ON A 5 MI FINAL.
Narrative: R DOWNWIND FOR RWY 21 AS INSTRUCTED BY SDL TWR. WAS TOLD BY TWR THAT TFC TO FOLLOW WAS A GULFSTREAM ON 5 MI FINAL. REPLIED: NEGATIVE ON THAT TFC, LOOKING. ASKED TWR IF WE WERE #1 OR #2. TWR REPLIED TFC TO FOLLOW WAS GULFSTREAM OFF TO OUR R. REPLIED I SAW TFC TO R, BUT IT DIDN'T APPEAR TO BE A GULFSTREAM (SAW A CITATION TO THE R AT ABOUT 2 O'CLOCK POS, TURNING TO FINAL). SAW GULFSTREAM AT OUR 10 O'CLOCK POS. TWR INSTRUCTED US TO BREAK OFF, TURN L IMMEDIATELY. SAW GULFSTREAM INITIALLY TURN TO ITS R, THEN TURN TO ITS L AWAY FROM US. GULFSTREAM LANDED, WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO ESTABLISH 4 MI FINAL FOR RWY 21, WHICH WE DID. LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT. TCASII WOULD HAVE HELPED. MAY HAVE BEEN FACTOR FOR GULFSTREAM. CONFUSION IN PATTERN AS TO WHERE WE WERE IN SEQUENCE. SHOULD HAVE ASKED CTLR TO CALL OUR TURN TO BASE, THAT WAY NO CONFUSION OVER OUR SEQUENCE AND POS RELATIVE TO OTHER ACFT.
