Narrative:
We were descending IFR with ZLA in VMC through 5000 ft. Lax said airport 12 O'clock position cleared direct and no traffic between us and imperial. We looked at 12 O'clock position and said airport in sight. However, we mistakenly saw el centro NAS which was ahead in line with imperial and we cold not see imperial (it was only 4 mi on the other side of el centro.) we entered the south end of el centro NAS class D around 2000 ft, maybe 2500 ft AGL, when we realized it was not imperial. We immediately exited their class D to imperial. There was no traffic and no one from el centro or lax has contacted us about the incursion. I did not know el centro was there. From now on no more complacency, study the charts. I will make sure I have airport symbols selected on the EFIS. That alone would have showed the NAS.
