Narrative:

I was flight training in the msp area, after making an approach to red wing airport, and talking to msp approach and on a discreet code. I requested the NDB approach to runway 31 stp. I was cleared for the approach. I requested a missed approach and an ILS approach to runway 32. But I was directed to contact stp tower, which I did, and requested a missed approach and an ILS to runway 32. Stp asked if I'd like to remain on their frequency. I accepted and was asked to report downwind and that there was a C177 on approach to runway 32. I continued the downwind to runway 32, until past the marker and directed the student to start the approach on his own. Outside the marker our tcad alerted and we descended 100 ft and a C177 missed us by 100 ft (we did not see this traffic and had looked for it, because of the notice from stp). We thought the traffic had already completed the approach and we were on different frequencys.

Title: NMAC OCCURS WHEN A TRAINING FLT INSTRUCTOR PLT ASSUMES HIS OWN ROLE AS APCH COORDINATOR AND TURNS IN FOR AN EARLY START ON AN ILS APCH TO RWY 32 AT STP, MN.

Narrative: I WAS FLT TRAINING IN THE MSP AREA, AFTER MAKING AN APCH TO RED WING ARPT, AND TALKING TO MSP APCH AND ON A DISCREET CODE. I REQUESTED THE NDB APCH TO RWY 31 STP. I WAS CLRED FOR THE APCH. I REQUESTED A MISSED APCH AND AN ILS APCH TO RWY 32. BUT I WAS DIRECTED TO CONTACT STP TWR, WHICH I DID, AND REQUESTED A MISSED APCH AND AN ILS TO RWY 32. STP ASKED IF I'D LIKE TO REMAIN ON THEIR FREQ. I ACCEPTED AND WAS ASKED TO RPT DOWNWIND AND THAT THERE WAS A C177 ON APCH TO RWY 32. I CONTINUED THE DOWNWIND TO RWY 32, UNTIL PAST THE MARKER AND DIRECTED THE STUDENT TO START THE APCH ON HIS OWN. OUTSIDE THE MARKER OUR TCAD ALERTED AND WE DSNDED 100 FT AND A C177 MISSED US BY 100 FT (WE DID NOT SEE THIS TFC AND HAD LOOKED FOR IT, BECAUSE OF THE NOTICE FROM STP). WE THOUGHT THE TFC HAD ALREADY COMPLETED THE APCH AND WE WERE ON DIFFERENT FREQS.
