Air Traffic Incident | Pilot Deviation |
Narrative:
During jump run, traffic was called 3 mi east. After releasing jumpers (3 groups), traffic was called 1 mi east. Jump run was aborted and a go around performed. After landing, a jumper, which was the last to exit before the go around stated that he came very close to an air carrier X jet, estimating the distance to be approximately 1000 ft. The traffic was not in visual contact nor was it in a position to be seen. ZKC was then heard to say to the MD80 that the turn took him further south than anticipated. This situation could have been prevented in several ways: 1) earlier notification at conflicting traffic. 2) ATC recommending an aborted jump run and/or go around. 3) closer attention and a more proactive role by all parties involved, including myself, ATC, and the conflicting traffic. In addition, it was believed that all large aircraft in the area were on the vandalia arrival using the vla VOR which is 6 mi north. This conflict occurred directly over the airport. Attention needs to be raised on this matter so as to prevent any future incidents and/or accidents.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CRITICAL CONFLICT BTWN A SKYDIVER FROM A DHC-6 THAT FELL WITHIN 1000 FT HORIZLY FROM AN MD80 THAT HAD OVERSHOT IT'S TURN DSNDING TO 11000 FT ON THE VLA 4 ARR, PASSING OVER THE ARPT AT VLA, IL.
Narrative: DURING JUMP RUN, TFC WAS CALLED 3 MI E. AFTER RELEASING JUMPERS (3 GROUPS), TFC WAS CALLED 1 MI E. JUMP RUN WAS ABORTED AND A GAR PERFORMED. AFTER LNDG, A JUMPER, WHICH WAS THE LAST TO EXIT BEFORE THE GAR STATED THAT HE CAME VERY CLOSE TO AN ACR X JET, ESTIMATING THE DISTANCE TO BE APPROX 1000 FT. THE TFC WAS NOT IN VISUAL CONTACT NOR WAS IT IN A POS TO BE SEEN. ZKC WAS THEN HEARD TO SAY TO THE MD80 THAT THE TURN TOOK HIM FURTHER S THAN ANTICIPATED. THIS SIT COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED IN SEVERAL WAYS: 1) EARLIER NOTIFICATION AT CONFLICTING TFC. 2) ATC RECOMMENDING AN ABORTED JUMP RUN AND/OR GAR. 3) CLOSER ATTN AND A MORE PROACTIVE ROLE BY ALL PARTIES INVOLVED, INCLUDING MYSELF, ATC, AND THE CONFLICTING TFC. IN ADDITION, IT WAS BELIEVED THAT ALL LARGE ACFT IN THE AREA WERE ON THE VANDALIA ARR USING THE VLA VOR WHICH IS 6 MI N. THIS CONFLICT OCCURRED DIRECTLY OVER THE ARPT. ATTN NEEDS TO BE RAISED ON THIS MATTER SO AS TO PREVENT ANY FUTURE INCIDENTS AND/OR ACCIDENTS.
