Narrative:
Doors closed. Checklist complete. Called for push. Brakes released. Started to move, APU faulted. Stopped push and was close enough to the jetbridge to get electric hooked up. Asked for air cart and started the aircraft. Continued the push and takeoff. Wrote up APU fault for ZZZ maintenance to correct. It was a bad judgement call. Should have let sjc maintenance placard APU and do what was necessary to fully comply with the MEL before departure. I can't explain why I did what I did. We were not in a rush -- the WX was not about to get worse. We have been flying around with a lot more inoperative APU's and other deferrals than I have been used to with the B757/767 fleet. That's not an excuse -- just an observation that seems to have contributed to my complacency. Bottom line -- this situation was handled poorly.

Title: B767 CREW DID NOT GET AN INOP APU PROPERLY DEFERRED PER THE MEL PRIOR TO DEPARTING THE GATE AT SJC.

SHOULD HAVE LET SJC MAINT PLACARD APU AND DO WHAT WAS NECESSARY TO FULLY COMPLY WITH THE MEL BEFORE DEP. I CAN'T EXPLAIN WHY I DID WHAT I DID.
