Narrative:
After a 3 hour delay due to WX and runway repair because of a lightning strike, we wre given clearance to push and taxi with a void time of 10 mins after push. Approaching the hold short line, we were given an indefinite hold due to ZNY not allowing any traffic into their sector. Bdl clearance asked if we could accept a clearance to mco essentially via cam, syr, cle, then south to mco. This clearance avoided ZNY airspace. I sent the clearance to dispatch. Our time was limited as we were approaching minimum fuel for takeoff. I was loaded with an additional 4500 pounds of contingency fuel, and assumed that it was suitable to get to our destination (with the required alternate fuel). I took off without hearing from dispatch. Airborne, I contacted my dispatcher and he was concerned about the fuel load and the new route. We were able to get alternate routing and landed with plenty of fuel, but I should not have taken off without hearing from dispatch.

AIRBORNE, I CONTACTED MY DISPATCHER AND HE WAS CONCERNED ABOUT THE FUEL LOAD AND THE NEW RTE. WE WERE ABLE TO GET ALTERNATE ROUTING AND LANDED WITH PLENTY OF FUEL, BUT I SHOULD NOT HAVE TAKEN OFF WITHOUT HEARING FROM DISPATCH.
