Narrative:
At FL310, #1 engine started vibrating with loud bangs. #1 EPR started fluctuating with all other indications being normal. Turned the autoplt off. Pulled the throttle back to idle. Engine recovered. No ECAM at this time. Tried pushing the throttle up and conditions returned. Decided to operate the engine in degraded mode. After accomplishing driftdown checklist, captain notified ATC and dispatch. Declared emergency and notified ATC about diversion. After a call to dispatch and air carrier maintenance control, flight crew used best judgement and decided to divert to ind, which was the nearest suitable airport in point of time to make a safe landing. First officer handled the ATC while captain briefed the flight attendants and passenger. Captain issued a cabin advisory to purser and confirmed ground equipment would be there on arrival. When captain became the PF, briefed the approach and landing to runway 23L in ind. Landing was uneventful, exited the runway, shut down the #1 engine and taxied to the ramp.

AFTER A CALL TO DISPATCH AND ACR MAINT CTL, FLC USED BEST JUDGEMENT AND DECIDED TO DIVERT TO IND, WHICH WAS THE NEAREST SUITABLE ARPT IN POINT OF TIME TO MAKE A SAFE LNDG. FO HANDLED THE ATC WHILE CAPT BRIEFED THE FLT ATTENDANTS AND PAX. CAPT ISSUED A CABIN ADVISORY TO PURSER AND CONFIRMED GND EQUIP WOULD BE THERE ON ARR. WHEN CAPT BECAME THE PF, BRIEFED THE APCH AND LNDG TO RWY 23L IN IND. LNDG WAS UNEVENTFUL, EXITED THE RWY, SHUT DOWN THE #1 ENG AND TAXIED TO THE RAMP.
