Narrative:
IFR en route at 8000 ft MSL on V56. Observed erratic navigation indications, 30 amp discharge on ammeter. Reset alternator, initially observed full-scale change on a meter. Followed +/- 30 seconds later by full-scale discharge, accompanied by electrical smoke in cockpit. Declared emergency with shaw approach (not sure if radio was transmitting). Descended on airway to 6000 ft, sms in sight. Secured battery and altitude switches, manually deployed landing gear, briefly turned on battery to verify landing gear down and locked, then secured battery for remainder of descent and landing. Landed without further incident. Smoke cleared on descent. Called anderson FSS when aircraft secured. They relayed IFR cancellation to shaw AFB approach. No injuries to either person aboard.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A BE24 PLT, ENRTE AT 8000 FT, ENCOUNTERED ELECTRICAL PROBS WHICH PRODUCED SMOKE IN THE COCKPIT.
Narrative: IFR ENRTE AT 8000 FT MSL ON V56. OBSERVED ERRATIC NAV INDICATIONS, 30 AMP DISCHARGE ON AMMETER. RESET ALTERNATOR, INITIALLY OBSERVED FULL-SCALE CHANGE ON A METER. FOLLOWED +/- 30 SECONDS LATER BY FULL-SCALE DISCHARGE, ACCOMPANIED BY ELECTRICAL SMOKE IN COCKPIT. DECLARED EMER WITH SHAW APCH (NOT SURE IF RADIO WAS XMITTING). DESCENDED ON AIRWAY TO 6000 FT, SMS IN SIGHT. SECURED BATTERY AND ALT SWITCHES, MANUALLY DEPLOYED LNDG GEAR, BRIEFLY TURNED ON BATTERY TO VERIFY LNDG GEAR DOWN AND LOCKED, THEN SECURED BATTERY FOR REMAINDER OF DSCNT AND LNDG. LANDED WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. SMOKE CLRED ON DSCNT. CALLED ANDERSON FSS WHEN ACFT SECURED. THEY RELAYED IFR CANCELLATION TO SHAW AFB APCH. NO INJURIES TO EITHER PERSON ABOARD.
