Narrative:
Climbing out through FL180 noticed oil quantity on left engine drop to 4 quarts. Minimum is 8 quarts. Reduced thrust to idle, slowed to 250 KTS, slow climb rate. Notified dispatch/talked to maintenance control. Pressure normal/temperature high but normal range. Started slow turn back to stl. Oil quantity decreased slowly towards zero. Notified flight attendants of return to stl. Notified maintenance control and dispatch of impending engine precautionary shutdown. Started slow descent. Notified center of emergency, as oil pressure wavered around 40-35 psi. As oil pressure dropped below 35 psi secured engine in accordance with company procedures. Given vector to airport, st louis international, lambert field. Entered downwind, long base and long stabilized final for runway 12R. Visual conditions backed up by ILS to runway 12R. Crash and emergency vehicles standing by. Touchdown and approach much easier than simulator training. No problems with aircraft, no leaks or fire. Taxied to gate.

Narrative: CLBING OUT THROUGH FL180 NOTICED OIL QUANTITY ON L ENG DROP TO 4 QUARTS. MINIMUM IS 8 QUARTS. REDUCED THRUST TO IDLE, SLOWED TO 250 KTS, SLOW CLB RATE. NOTIFIED DISPATCH/TALKED TO MAINT CTL. PRESSURE NORMAL/TEMP HIGH BUT NORMAL RANGE. STARTED SLOW TURN BACK TO STL. OIL QUANTITY DECREASED SLOWLY TOWARDS ZERO. NOTIFIED FLT ATTENDANTS OF RETURN TO STL. NOTIFIED MAINT CTL AND DISPATCH OF IMPENDING ENG PRECAUTIONARY SHUTDOWN. STARTED SLOW DSCNT. NOTIFIED CTR OF EMER, AS OIL PRESSURE WAVERED AROUND 40-35 PSI. AS OIL PRESSURE DROPPED BELOW 35 PSI SECURED ENG IN ACCORDANCE WITH COMPANY PROCS. GIVEN VECTOR TO ARPT, ST LOUIS INTL, LAMBERT FIELD. ENTERED DOWNWIND, LONG BASE AND LONG STABILIZED FINAL FOR RWY 12R. VISUAL CONDITIONS BACKED UP BY ILS TO RWY 12R. CRASH AND EMER VEHICLES STANDING BY. TOUCHDOWN AND APCH MUCH EASIER THAN SIMULATOR TRAINING. NO PROBS WITH ACFT, NO LEAKS OR FIRE. TAXIED TO GATE.
