Narrative:
Local airshow. Waiver airspace from XA00-XC00 and XE00-XG00 local. Several aircraft in run-up pad runway 30 awaiting departure. I was #1, call sign xxabc, swift aircraft call sign xyabc was approximately #6 for departure. My open cockpit stearman radio is intermittently unreliable. I heard smx tower clear, 'abc cleared for immediate takeoff.' I rolled onto runway and tried to acknowledge. My radio failed to transmit, no side-tone. I then saw the swift charging around all the aircraft in the run-up pad. As I now knew I had radio failure, I taxied down the runway and exited at taxiway C. The swift pilot was told to hold position but he claimed he could make a 'formation takeoff.' wrong! Aborting takeoff and clearing the runway seemed the best solution to a worsening situation.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: SIMILAR SOUNDING ACFT NUMBER CREATES AN UNAUTH RWY ENTRY, RWY INCURSION BY A GOLDEN SWIFT AFTER THE CLRED ACFT, A STEARMAN, HAD EXPERIENCED A RADIO PROB AND CLRED THE ACTIVE RWY AT SMX, CA.
Narrative: LCL AIRSHOW. WAIVER AIRSPACE FROM XA00-XC00 AND XE00-XG00 LCL. SEVERAL ACFT IN RUN-UP PAD RWY 30 AWAITING DEP. I WAS #1, CALL SIGN XXABC, SWIFT ACFT CALL SIGN XYABC WAS APPROX #6 FOR DEP. MY OPEN COCKPIT STEARMAN RADIO IS INTERMITTENTLY UNRELIABLE. I HEARD SMX TWR CLR, 'ABC CLRED FOR IMMEDIATE TKOF.' I ROLLED ONTO RWY AND TRIED TO ACKNOWLEDGE. MY RADIO FAILED TO XMIT, NO SIDE-TONE. I THEN SAW THE SWIFT CHARGING AROUND ALL THE ACFT IN THE RUN-UP PAD. AS I NOW KNEW I HAD RADIO FAILURE, I TAXIED DOWN THE RWY AND EXITED AT TXWY C. THE SWIFT PLT WAS TOLD TO HOLD POS BUT HE CLAIMED HE COULD MAKE A 'FORMATION TKOF.' WRONG! ABORTING TKOF AND CLRING THE RWY SEEMED THE BEST SOLUTION TO A WORSENING SIT.
