Narrative:
The event occurred at the end of 6 days of flying. We landed slightly long on runway 22L. I decided we were too fast to take the highspd taxiway J. ATC told us to hold short of runway 31L and the first officer repeated the clearance to hold short. I somehow mentally had our position somewhere else. My intention was turn left on the next taxiway, which in reality was runway 31L then hold short of runway 31L. There was no conflict with any other aircraft. However, I did taxi onto an active runway after hearing the acknowledgement to hold short, thinking it was a taxiway. I have been in that particular part of the airport once before. Normally, it is fairly easy to make the taxiway J turnoff. This was a somewhat unfamiliar area. I relaxed too much and lost my situational awareness.

Title: B767-300ER CAPT INADVERTENTLY TAXIED ONTO ACTIVE RWY DURING TAXI IN AT JFK.
Narrative: THE EVENT OCCURRED AT THE END OF 6 DAYS OF FLYING. WE LANDED SLIGHTLY LONG ON RWY 22L. I DECIDED WE WERE TOO FAST TO TAKE THE HIGHSPD TXWY J. ATC TOLD US TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 31L AND THE FO REPEATED THE CLRNC TO HOLD SHORT. I SOMEHOW MENTALLY HAD OUR POS SOMEWHERE ELSE. MY INTENTION WAS TURN L ON THE NEXT TXWY, WHICH IN REALITY WAS RWY 31L THEN HOLD SHORT OF RWY 31L. THERE WAS NO CONFLICT WITH ANY OTHER ACFT. HOWEVER, I DID TAXI ONTO AN ACTIVE RWY AFTER HEARING THE ACKNOWLEDGEMENT TO HOLD SHORT, THINKING IT WAS A TXWY. I HAVE BEEN IN THAT PARTICULAR PART OF THE ARPT ONCE BEFORE. NORMALLY, IT IS FAIRLY EASY TO MAKE THE TXWY J TURNOFF. THIS WAS A SOMEWHAT UNFAMILIAR AREA. I RELAXED TOO MUCH AND LOST MY SITUATIONAL AWARENESS.
