Narrative:
Cleared for tip toe to visual runway 28L. First officer flying. About 10 mi out he was still fast and flew through the runway 28L final, triggering an RA from an aircraft on runway 28R. We had not selected TA yet, so followed RA back to safe altitude which was a little high. From here we had to use maximum effort to slow and descend within limits. Tower asked if we needed to go around to which I said, 'no', after a delay to think about it. We were stable by 1000 ft which was quite a job by first officer. My only nagging concern now was a second RA we received while lined up for runway 28L. At the time we were a little high on our profile and about 4 mi out. As we were about 2 mi out, an aircraft showed up on our TCASII screen at 6 O'clock position and less than 1 mi. I asked tower if we were indeed cleared to land and he said yes. From 8 mi till touchdown we went from calm and normal, to wild and crazy, back to stable. First officer was new in aircraft and new to a night charted visual into sfo. I should have helped him more than I did.
