Narrative:

Departed sea via mountain 5 SID. This SID requires crossing 341 degree radial sea above 4000 ft at 8 DME and then turn to 070 degree heading for vectors. FMS/navigation function started turn 070 degrees approximately 6.5 DME, rolled out 7.2 - 7.4 DME on 070 degree radial. Controller correctly stated we should not have started turn until 8 DME from sea. Use of navigation fine for departure so long as turn to 070 degrees is not allowed to start until 8 DME. Aircraft turn to 070 degrees will vary and may remain within noise abatement (SID) corridor or, as in this case, may turn too early. Recommend note on SID for FMS equipped aircraft. To not use navigation for departure due to possible early turn. Supplemental information from acn 564110: this situation results from reliance on FMS to fly the correct course. Need a way to specify points as required flyover points. Also, the perception that if the FMS says it's time to turn -- turn! Callback conversation with reporter acn 564105 revealed the following information: the departure is in the FMS database and was not manually loaded by the crew.

Title: AN ACR AIRBUS CREW FLYING THE MOUNTAIN 5 DEP (VECTOR) FROM SEA, WA, TURNS BEFORE THE REQUIRED 8 DME FIX TO THE PUBLISHED VECTOR HDG.

Narrative: DEPARTED SEA VIA MOUNTAIN 5 SID. THIS SID REQUIRES XING 341 DEG RADIAL SEA ABOVE 4000 FT AT 8 DME AND THEN TURN TO 070 DEG HDG FOR VECTORS. FMS/NAV FUNCTION STARTED TURN 070 DEGS APPROX 6.5 DME, ROLLED OUT 7.2 - 7.4 DME ON 070 DEG RADIAL. CTLR CORRECTLY STATED WE SHOULD NOT HAVE STARTED TURN UNTIL 8 DME FROM SEA. USE OF NAV FINE FOR DEP SO LONG AS TURN TO 070 DEGS IS NOT ALLOWED TO START UNTIL 8 DME. ACFT TURN TO 070 DEGS WILL VARY AND MAY REMAIN WITHIN NOISE ABATEMENT (SID) CORRIDOR OR, AS IN THIS CASE, MAY TURN TOO EARLY. RECOMMEND NOTE ON SID FOR FMS EQUIPPED ACFT. TO NOT USE NAV FOR DEP DUE TO POSSIBLE EARLY TURN. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 564110: THIS SIT RESULTS FROM RELIANCE ON FMS TO FLY THE CORRECT COURSE. NEED A WAY TO SPECIFY POINTS AS REQUIRED FLYOVER POINTS. ALSO, THE PERCEPTION THAT IF THE FMS SAYS IT'S TIME TO TURN -- TURN! CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR ACN 564105 REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE DEP IS IN THE FMS DATABASE AND WAS NOT MANUALLY LOADED BY THE CREW.
