Narrative:
We were departing amarillo going to dallas. A single engine cessna landed on runway 4 and we were cleared into position and hold. The tower told the cessna to exit the runway at taxiway a. The aircraft moved to the right and appeared to clear the runway as instructed. Tower cleared us for takeoff. As we were rolling down the runway, the tower told us to abort our takeoff due to an aircraft on the runway. The cessna was still on the runway, but off to the far right side. Tower told the cessna to expedite down to taxiway B. Captain aborted the takeoff and we reached taxi speed near taxiway a. Because the tower noticed the cessna missed taxiway a and alerted us in time, we never got anywhere near the other aircraft. In my mind, the only reason this happened was because of the limited visibility of nighttime operations.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B737 CREW, DEPARTING AMA, EXECUTED A TWR INITIATED ABORTED TKOF WHEN LNDG TFC DID NOT CLR THE RWY AT ASSIGNED TXWY.
Narrative: WE WERE DEPARTING AMARILLO GOING TO DALLAS. A SINGLE ENG CESSNA LANDED ON RWY 4 AND WE WERE CLRED INTO POS AND HOLD. THE TWR TOLD THE CESSNA TO EXIT THE RWY AT TXWY A. THE ACFT MOVED TO THE R AND APPEARED TO CLR THE RWY AS INSTRUCTED. TWR CLRED US FOR TKOF. AS WE WERE ROLLING DOWN THE RWY, THE TWR TOLD US TO ABORT OUR TKOF DUE TO AN ACFT ON THE RWY. THE CESSNA WAS STILL ON THE RWY, BUT OFF TO THE FAR R SIDE. TWR TOLD THE CESSNA TO EXPEDITE DOWN TO TXWY B. CAPT ABORTED THE TKOF AND WE REACHED TAXI SPD NEAR TXWY A. BECAUSE THE TWR NOTICED THE CESSNA MISSED TXWY A AND ALERTED US IN TIME, WE NEVER GOT ANYWHERE NEAR THE OTHER ACFT. IN MY MIND, THE ONLY REASON THIS HAPPENED WAS BECAUSE OF THE LIMITED VISIBILITY OF NIGHTTIME OPS.
