Narrative:
Landing on runway 1 rollout, controller said to 'exit taxiway north, call ground.' I exited onto the taxiway with the sign for taxiway north and turned towards the gate, slowing to a stop after crossing the hold short lines. The signage shows only taxiway north exiting the runway at this point. However, if you follow the taxi lines off the runway and stay left, you are actually on taxiway N1. The only way to know this is to consult a diagram while exiting the runway -- not very practical at those speeds. In my opinion, the signs need to be changed to show this distinction.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A CARJ CREW, AFTER LNDG AT DCA, EXITED THE RWY AT THE WRONG TXWY.
Narrative: LNDG ON RWY 1 ROLLOUT, CTLR SAID TO 'EXIT TXWY N, CALL GND.' I EXITED ONTO THE TXWY WITH THE SIGN FOR TXWY N AND TURNED TOWARDS THE GATE, SLOWING TO A STOP AFTER XING THE HOLD SHORT LINES. THE SIGNAGE SHOWS ONLY TXWY N EXITING THE RWY AT THIS POINT. HOWEVER, IF YOU FOLLOW THE TAXI LINES OFF THE RWY AND STAY L, YOU ARE ACTUALLY ON TXWY N1. THE ONLY WAY TO KNOW THIS IS TO CONSULT A DIAGRAM WHILE EXITING THE RWY -- NOT VERY PRACTICAL AT THOSE SPDS. IN MY OPINION, THE SIGNS NEED TO BE CHANGED TO SHOW THIS DISTINCTION.
