Narrative:

After takeoff and gear retraction, we had 3 red gear unsafe lights and no amber gear door light. Climbed to 7000 ft MSL and maintained 220-230 KTS. Told msp departure control had a gear indication problem and would like to work on it. First officer flew aircraft while I did our communication procedure 2.32.17 gear handle-up/gear unsafe. Did the procedure and called dispatch/maintenance control and advised them of the problem. They advised us to return to msp. Advised msp approach control that we were returning to msp and to have the emergency equipment standing by. Advised flight attendants and passenger of the gear indication problem. Upon our return to msp, gear was extended, normal indications, and landed without incident. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the direct cause of the landing gear position indication malfunction was not released by maintenance, and was not followed up by the reporter. The reporter said it was believed to have been caused by an intermittent gear sensor.
