Narrative:

Location: stl airport. After landing on runway 12R, tower told us to clear at taxiway H and contact ground. We cleared at taxiway H and stopped short of taxiway a. Before we could contact ground, tower gave us a phone number and asked us to call supervisor. Supervisor asked why we didn't turn onto taxiway a. He said we almost caused a controller event. I told him we never turn onto an active taxiway without instructions. I thought my tail was clear of runway 12R. He said my tail was clear, but I should automatically turn onto taxiway a. I told him that his instructions should have been clear at taxiway H, right turn on taxiway a, contact ground. He said that was only for new carriers -- and we should do that without instruction. He felt I was deliberately trying to cause an incident and asked why I wasn't trying to help him out.
