Narrative:

Aircraft has airworthiness directive requiring 1000 pounds of fuel to be kept in center fuel tank with pumps off. The aircraft burns 100 pounds every 40 seconds at cruise, and as we were preparing to turn off the center pumps as the quantity neared 1000 pounds, we were distraction by ATC handoff and then a flight attendant called from the cabin. We turned off the pumps with 700 pounds in the center tank. The airworthiness directive states to turn off pump at approximately 1000 pounds. I feel we should have some sort of alarm clock that we can set to go off at the estimated time the fuel reaches 1000 pounds. I now set my travel alarm to accomplish this!
