Narrative:
While on base leg for the ILS runway 11 approach, and level at 3200 ft MSL, received a GPWS 'terrain, pull up' warning. Initiated immediate climb, and informed ATC. They replied that we were clear of traffic to 5000 ft. Terrain warning ceased at approximately 3500-3700 ft. ATC stated terrain should not have been a factor at our position. Leveled at approximately 4200 ft and descended/reclred to 4000 ft. Remainder of flight uneventful. Our guess was that the unstable atmospheric conditions (frontal passage) and associated turbulence/bumpy ride may have somehow contributed to a false GPWS alert. Supplemental information from acn 568769: on vectors for ILS runway 11 approach to oakland, a terrain GPWS warning sounded. We were level and in IMC. We initiated immediate climb and informed ATC. They informed us that we were clear of traffic up to 5000 ft MSL.

Title: MD88 CREW EXECUTED A GPWS EMER ESCAPE MANEUVER WITH CLB UNTIL THE GPWS TERRAIN WARNING STOPPED. ACFT WAS ABOVE THE MVA AT THE TIME OF OCCURRENCE IN NCT CLASS B AIRSPACE.
Narrative: WHILE ON BASE LEG FOR THE ILS RWY 11 APCH, AND LEVEL AT 3200 FT MSL, RECEIVED A GPWS 'TERRAIN, PULL UP' WARNING. INITIATED IMMEDIATE CLB, AND INFORMED ATC. THEY REPLIED THAT WE WERE CLR OF TFC TO 5000 FT. TERRAIN WARNING CEASED AT APPROX 3500-3700 FT. ATC STATED TERRAIN SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN A FACTOR AT OUR POS. LEVELED AT APPROX 4200 FT AND DSNDED/RECLRED TO 4000 FT. REMAINDER OF FLT UNEVENTFUL. OUR GUESS WAS THAT THE UNSTABLE ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS (FRONTAL PASSAGE) AND ASSOCIATED TURB/BUMPY RIDE MAY HAVE SOMEHOW CONTRIBUTED TO A FALSE GPWS ALERT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 568769: ON VECTORS FOR ILS RWY 11 APCH TO OAKLAND, A TERRAIN GPWS WARNING SOUNDED. WE WERE LEVEL AND IN IMC. WE INITIATED IMMEDIATE CLB AND INFORMED ATC. THEY INFORMED US THAT WE WERE CLR OF TFC UP TO 5000 FT MSL.
