Narrative:
Cleared by apron control to taxi from gate to runway 10 via taxiway G. At taxiway G, ramp control told us to contact ground. We were already holding short of runway 10 at the time we contacted ground. Ground control told us to taxi to runway 10 and contact tower when ready for departure. The first officer and I understood this as back taxi on runway 10 and contact tower. We taxied onto runway 10 and called tower. He informed us that next time we need clearance to taxi onto the runway. The first officer and I both acknowledged the tower controller. Our perception was that we were cleared onto the runway. In hindsight, I should have questioned the ground controller for clarification due to the phraseology of the taxi instructions. This was only the second flight together as a crew and the first trip into montreal for either of us.

Title: RWY INCURSION AT CYUL.
Narrative: CLRED BY APRON CTL TO TAXI FROM GATE TO RWY 10 VIA TXWY G. AT TXWY G, RAMP CTL TOLD US TO CONTACT GND. WE WERE ALREADY HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 10 AT THE TIME WE CONTACTED GND. GND CTL TOLD US TO TAXI TO RWY 10 AND CONTACT TWR WHEN READY FOR DEP. THE FO AND I UNDERSTOOD THIS AS BACK TAXI ON RWY 10 AND CONTACT TWR. WE TAXIED ONTO RWY 10 AND CALLED TWR. HE INFORMED US THAT NEXT TIME WE NEED CLRNC TO TAXI ONTO THE RWY. THE FO AND I BOTH ACKNOWLEDGED THE TWR CTLR. OUR PERCEPTION WAS THAT WE WERE CLRED ONTO THE RWY. IN HINDSIGHT, I SHOULD HAVE QUESTIONED THE GND CTLR FOR CLARIFICATION DUE TO THE PHRASEOLOGY OF THE TAXI INSTRUCTIONS. THIS WAS ONLY THE SECOND FLT TOGETHER AS A CREW AND THE FIRST TRIP INTO MONTREAL FOR EITHER OF US.
