Narrative:
While the flight attendant was letting the last 2 passenger off, she heard the ground crew yelling that the APU was on fire. I shut down the APU and the APU fuel valve, and instructed the first officer to go outside and check the APU. There was never a fire indication or fire warning. Performed fire checklist. The ground crew had already called the fire and rescue. By the time they arrived at the gate, the APU fire was out and no evidence of fire. I remained in the cockpit until everybody was off the aircraft, and spoke with the fire chief to confirm everything was ok.
