Narrative:

The aircraft was taxiing out from an FBO at teb when the controller told us to back taxi and hold short. We understood she wanted us to taxi to the end of the runway and hold for departure. While we were taxiing back, she cleared an airplane to land. I then advised her we were on the runway and taxiing back. She then proceeded to tell me she wanted us to cross the runway and back taxi on the taxiway to the end of the runway. I think it could have been prevented if she had told us to cross the runway and taxi to the end, and hold short and not used the word 'back taxi!' that is where the confusion took place. We had plenty of time to clear the runway before the aircraft landed, but I feel it should be noted.

Title: LR55 DEPARTING TEB TAXIES VIA RWY WITHOUT ATC CLRNC.

Narrative: THE ACFT WAS TAXIING OUT FROM AN FBO AT TEB WHEN THE CTLR TOLD US TO BACK TAXI AND HOLD SHORT. WE UNDERSTOOD SHE WANTED US TO TAXI TO THE END OF THE RWY AND HOLD FOR DEP. WHILE WE WERE TAXIING BACK, SHE CLRED AN AIRPLANE TO LAND. I THEN ADVISED HER WE WERE ON THE RWY AND TAXIING BACK. SHE THEN PROCEEDED TO TELL ME SHE WANTED US TO CROSS THE RWY AND BACK TAXI ON THE TXWY TO THE END OF THE RWY. I THINK IT COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED IF SHE HAD TOLD US TO CROSS THE RWY AND TAXI TO THE END, AND HOLD SHORT AND NOT USED THE WORD 'BACK TAXI!' THAT IS WHERE THE CONFUSION TOOK PLACE. WE HAD PLENTY OF TIME TO CLR THE RWY BEFORE THE ACFT LANDED, BUT I FEEL IT SHOULD BE NOTED.
