Narrative:
Aircraft arrived in ZZZ with multiple bird strikes. One strike damaged the right nose landing light, leaving the back shell and exposed wires. I inspected all the bird strikes, finding the nose landing gear light the only recordable damage. Parts required were not in stock. I capped and stowed the exposed wires and collared the associated circuit breaker and dispatched the aircraft under MEL 33-41-01D. I realize now that I should have contacted engineering for an era for dispatch approval. The MEL 33-41-01D, that I used to dispatch aircraft, deferred inoperative nose gear lights. It did not address the requirement for a cover in place of a svcable lens. I did notify, by phone, the coordinator of the parts required to return to service. Recurrence of this error may be prevented by adding a note to MEL 33-41-01, that a blanking plate must be installed if the lens/bulbs are not intact.
