Narrative:
First officer copied ATIS, I, as captain, got clearance. My readback and understanding was: cleared via slc 8 departure, wasatch 094 degree radial to mynton 303 degree radial. Mynton direct as filed. After takeoff, there was a delay in getting a handoff from slc tower to departure. We were just leveling at 10000 ft when switched to departure, and had passed the wasatch VOR. I told the first officer, who was flying, to start a right turn to intercept the outbound radial. At the same time, I checked in with departure control -- 'leveling 10000 ft, turning right to intercept the radial.' we were given an immediate turn back to heading 340 degree, and an expedited climb to FL230. Our heading at the time in the turn was approximately 10 degrees. Confusion between the clearance and slc 8 departure, which says -- fly heading for vectors.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: C560 CREW DID NOT FLY RWY HDG IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE ASSIGNED SID AT SLC.
Narrative: FO COPIED ATIS, I, AS CAPT, GOT CLRNC. MY READBACK AND UNDERSTANDING WAS: CLRED VIA SLC 8 DEP, WASATCH 094 DEG RADIAL TO MYNTON 303 DEG RADIAL. MYNTON DIRECT AS FILED. AFTER TKOF, THERE WAS A DELAY IN GETTING A HDOF FROM SLC TWR TO DEP. WE WERE JUST LEVELING AT 10000 FT WHEN SWITCHED TO DEP, AND HAD PASSED THE WASATCH VOR. I TOLD THE FO, WHO WAS FLYING, TO START A R TURN TO INTERCEPT THE OUTBOUND RADIAL. AT THE SAME TIME, I CHKED IN WITH DEP CTL -- 'LEVELING 10000 FT, TURNING R TO INTERCEPT THE RADIAL.' WE WERE GIVEN AN IMMEDIATE TURN BACK TO HDG 340 DEG, AND AN EXPEDITED CLB TO FL230. OUR HDG AT THE TIME IN THE TURN WAS APPROX 10 DEGS. CONFUSION BTWN THE CLRNC AND SLC 8 DEP, WHICH SAYS -- FLY HDG FOR VECTORS.
