Narrative:
The airplane checked out alright. Run-up checked out alright. Takeoff power normal. Climbed to 1400 ft MSL and was intending to continue climb to 1500 ft and leveloff when, without any warning and without any sound, the engine suddenly quit and went silent. I glanced around to see where I was in relation to the runway and, seeing that I had enough altitude, I turned back to the runway and landed without any problem. No damage at all to the airplane. At present, local mechanics are determining the nature of the problem. I could not restart the engine while in the air or when I landed.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A SMALL SINGLE ENG HIGH WING ACFT, ON TKOF CLB AT 1400 FT, DIVERTED DUE TO ENG FAILURE. CAUSE UNKNOWN.
Narrative: THE AIRPLANE CHKED OUT ALRIGHT. RUN-UP CHKED OUT ALRIGHT. TKOF PWR NORMAL. CLBED TO 1400 FT MSL AND WAS INTENDING TO CONTINUE CLB TO 1500 FT AND LEVELOFF WHEN, WITHOUT ANY WARNING AND WITHOUT ANY SOUND, THE ENG SUDDENLY QUIT AND WENT SILENT. I GLANCED AROUND TO SEE WHERE I WAS IN RELATION TO THE RWY AND, SEEING THAT I HAD ENOUGH ALT, I TURNED BACK TO THE RWY AND LANDED WITHOUT ANY PROB. NO DAMAGE AT ALL TO THE AIRPLANE. AT PRESENT, LCL MECHS ARE DETERMINING THE NATURE OF THE PROB. I COULD NOT RESTART THE ENG WHILE IN THE AIR OR WHEN I LANDED.
