Narrative:
The captain and I were in a canadair regional jet taxiing eastbound on taxiway left at atl. We were given instructions to taxi on taxiway left and were to hold short of taxiway D (an intersecting taxiway). The captain and I misunderstood the instructions and thought the controller said to hold short on taxiway left. We first noticed the confusion when we began the turn onto taxiway D and saw a B767 approaching us on taxiway M. Taxiway M is a parallel taxiway to taxiway left. I immediately told the captain to stop taxiing. We stopped short of taxiway M with enough room for the B767 to pass.

THE CAPT AND I MISUNDERSTOOD THE INSTRUCTIONS AND THOUGHT THE CTLR SAID TO HOLD SHORT ON TXWY L. WE FIRST NOTICED THE CONFUSION WHEN WE BEGAN THE TURN ONTO TXWY D AND SAW A B767 APCHING US ON TXWY M. TXWY M IS A PARALLEL TXWY TO TXWY L. I IMMEDIATELY TOLD THE CAPT TO STOP TAXIING. WE STOPPED SHORT OF TXWY M WITH ENOUGH ROOM FOR THE B767 TO PASS.
