Narrative:
The pilot, flying from the southwest, unaware the extended ny ADIZ (30 NM, floor to 18000 ft) entered that airspace in the northwest section. The route was to fly to broadway VOR then sparta VOR while descending to 2700 ft, and land at 1n4. This caused violation of the airspace by 3 NM. Pilot's relative inexperience, unfamiliarity with the terrain, strong winds and warning of possible wind shear from the 1n4 automated unicom also contributed to the incident. The pilot learned of infraction after landing at 1n4, where he was contacted by us customs. He immediately contacted N90 giving all requested information. Before departure the pilot obtained necessary permission from N90. It is this pilot's opinion that any future sectional charts should indicate by different shade any possible or probable extended ADIZ.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: UNAWARE OF ITS EXISTENCE, LOW TIME PLT OF PA28 INADVERTENTLY FLEW INTO NY ADIZ.
Narrative: THE PLT, FLYING FROM THE SW, UNAWARE THE EXTENDED NY ADIZ (30 NM, FLOOR TO 18000 FT) ENTERED THAT AIRSPACE IN THE NW SECTION. THE RTE WAS TO FLY TO BROADWAY VOR THEN SPARTA VOR WHILE DESCENDING TO 2700 FT, AND LAND AT 1N4. THIS CAUSED VIOLATION OF THE AIRSPACE BY 3 NM. PLT'S RELATIVE INEXPERIENCE, UNFAMILIARITY WITH THE TERRAIN, STRONG WINDS AND WARNING OF POSSIBLE WIND SHEAR FROM THE 1N4 AUTOMATED UNICOM ALSO CONTRIBUTED TO THE INCIDENT. THE PLT LEARNED OF INFRACTION AFTER LNDG AT 1N4, WHERE HE WAS CONTACTED BY US CUSTOMS. HE IMMEDIATELY CONTACTED N90 GIVING ALL REQUESTED INFO. BEFORE DEP THE PLT OBTAINED NECESSARY PERMISSION FROM N90. IT IS THIS PLT'S OPINION THAT ANY FUTURE SECTIONAL CHARTS SHOULD INDICATE BY DIFFERENT SHADE ANY POSSIBLE OR PROBABLE EXTENDED ADIZ.
