Narrative:

Planned a sequence of 4 airports with e-w runways on a day with strong northerly winds. At third airport, N79, monitored AWOS-3 on 119.175. 3 reports stated conditions were 020 degrees at 11 KTS, gusting 19 KTS, 070 degrees at 9 KTS gusting 14 KTS, 090 degrees at 12 KTS gusting 14 KTS. Set up for downwind for runway 8 and switched to CTAF 122.8, turning final with no AWOS update. Noticed high ground speed after crossing threshold. Continued landing with full braking after touchdown. Rolled out beyond pavement, approximately 50 ft into grass (3300 ft runway). No damage. Listened to AWOS as I taxied back to pavement: winds now 270 degrees at 14 KTS gusting 20 KTS! Should have monitored AWOS on second channel while landing and checked GPS ground speed and improved braking with no flaps on rollout -- not 50% flaps!

Title: SMA PLT RAN OFF THE END OF A 3297 FT RWY AFTER VARIABLE WINDS TURNED INTO TAILWINDS AT N79.

Narrative: PLANNED A SEQUENCE OF 4 ARPTS WITH E-W RWYS ON A DAY WITH STRONG NORTHERLY WINDS. AT THIRD ARPT, N79, MONITORED AWOS-3 ON 119.175. 3 RPTS STATED CONDITIONS WERE 020 DEGS AT 11 KTS, GUSTING 19 KTS, 070 DEGS AT 9 KTS GUSTING 14 KTS, 090 DEGS AT 12 KTS GUSTING 14 KTS. SET UP FOR DOWNWIND FOR RWY 8 AND SWITCHED TO CTAF 122.8, TURNING FINAL WITH NO AWOS UPDATE. NOTICED HIGH GND SPD AFTER XING THRESHOLD. CONTINUED LNDG WITH FULL BRAKING AFTER TOUCHDOWN. ROLLED OUT BEYOND PAVEMENT, APPROX 50 FT INTO GRASS (3300 FT RWY). NO DAMAGE. LISTENED TO AWOS AS I TAXIED BACK TO PAVEMENT: WINDS NOW 270 DEGS AT 14 KTS GUSTING 20 KTS! SHOULD HAVE MONITORED AWOS ON SECOND CHANNEL WHILE LNDG AND CHKED GPS GND SPD AND IMPROVED BRAKING WITH NO FLAPS ON ROLLOUT -- NOT 50% FLAPS!
