Narrative:
I departed bkl on runway 6R at approximately XA20 EDT with a right turn to the south at 500 ft AGL. I continued my climb and received no further instructions from the tower controller for several mins. After a while she came back and said 'are you still there?' I acknowledged that I was and asked for a frequency change to cle departure. She agreed and I changed frequencys. Upon establishing communications with departure, I was informed I had breached cleveland class B airspace. I believe there were 2 contributing factors to this incident. The first is that I was farther west than I thought, perhaps blown over a bit by the wind. That placed me above the 1900 ft shelf, not under the 3000 ft shelf as I had thought. Second, I believe that the bkl tower controller should have handed me off to departure sooner than she did, allowing me sufficient time to get authority/authorized to enter class B airspace or modify my route.

Title: C172 DEPARTING BKL ENTERS CLE CLASS B AIRSPACE WITHOUT CLRNC.
Narrative: I DEPARTED BKL ON RWY 6R AT APPROX XA20 EDT WITH A R TURN TO THE S AT 500 FT AGL. I CONTINUED MY CLB AND RECEIVED NO FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE TWR CTLR FOR SEVERAL MINS. AFTER A WHILE SHE CAME BACK AND SAID 'ARE YOU STILL THERE?' I ACKNOWLEDGED THAT I WAS AND ASKED FOR A FREQ CHANGE TO CLE DEP. SHE AGREED AND I CHANGED FREQS. UPON ESTABLISHING COMS WITH DEP, I WAS INFORMED I HAD BREACHED CLEVELAND CLASS B AIRSPACE. I BELIEVE THERE WERE 2 CONTRIBUTING FACTORS TO THIS INCIDENT. THE FIRST IS THAT I WAS FARTHER W THAN I THOUGHT, PERHAPS BLOWN OVER A BIT BY THE WIND. THAT PLACED ME ABOVE THE 1900 FT SHELF, NOT UNDER THE 3000 FT SHELF AS I HAD THOUGHT. SECOND, I BELIEVE THAT THE BKL TWR CTLR SHOULD HAVE HANDED ME OFF TO DEP SOONER THAN SHE DID, ALLOWING ME SUFFICIENT TIME TO GET AUTH TO ENTER CLASS B AIRSPACE OR MODIFY MY RTE.
