Narrative:
The controller told us to taxi 'sierra, echo cross 9L' clearance. I taxied on sierra and saw a diagonal east sign which confused me since taxiway location signs are usually perpendicular to the taxiway you're on so I passed that sign and crossed runway 35 and made a left on D taxiway and it was then the controller told us that we missed the taxiway east and crossed runway 35. I did look to both sides to make sure we were clear of any aircraft. What caused this error was we didn't pick up the part of the ATIS where it said that taxiway D north of runway was closed, which is why he instructed us to use taxiway east. We go into phl alot and I think we got a little ahead of ourselves and took the normal route we usually take. A contributing factor also was the fact we were in IMC WX all night with one missed approach and no sleep since the day before.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: LJ35 TAXIED ACROSS APCH END OF RWY 35 AT PHL WITHOUT CLRNC.
Narrative: THE CTLR TOLD US TO TAXI 'SIERRA, ECHO CROSS 9L' CLRNC. I TAXIED ON SIERRA AND SAW A DIAGONAL E SIGN WHICH CONFUSED ME SINCE TXWY LOCATION SIGNS ARE USUALLY PERPENDICULAR TO THE TXWY YOU'RE ON SO I PASSED THAT SIGN AND CROSSED RWY 35 AND MADE A L ON D TXWY AND IT WAS THEN THE CTLR TOLD US THAT WE MISSED THE TXWY E AND CROSSED RWY 35. I DID LOOK TO BOTH SIDES TO MAKE SURE WE WERE CLR OF ANY ACFT. WHAT CAUSED THIS ERROR WAS WE DIDN'T PICK UP THE PART OF THE ATIS WHERE IT SAID THAT TXWY D N OF RWY WAS CLOSED, WHICH IS WHY HE INSTRUCTED US TO USE TXWY E. WE GO INTO PHL ALOT AND I THINK WE GOT A LITTLE AHEAD OF OURSELVES AND TOOK THE NORMAL ROUTE WE USUALLY TAKE. A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR ALSO WAS THE FACT WE WERE IN IMC WX ALL NIGHT WITH ONE MISSED APCH AND NO SLEEP SINCE THE DAY BEFORE.
