Narrative:
While taxiing to the gate at phl, I observed the gate to be clear of ground support equipment, and the jetway well to the side. I picked up the marshalers signals to continue in, and I did so. At the end, he gave an abrupt stop signal, and I immediately and abruptly stopped the aircraft. I did not feel anything unusual, but was later informed that the engine nacelle had a small dent in it, and that it apparently had hit the jetway. The aircraft was inspected and removed from service for maintenance action. Apparently, maintenance had been done on the jetway the night before, and they had extended it, but failed to repos it when done. That, along with the marshalers failure to notice, caused the incident. Also, the paint for the jetway safe zone was worn out. Corrective actions include a policy to always return the jetways to their safe position after all operations of it. Of course, marshalers need to be extremely aware of all obstacles, and painted lines need to be kept fresh.
