Narrative:
I am a flight instructor at a busy flight school at birmingham international. One morning, my student and I were preparing for departure for a local IFR training flight. From the beginning, we were rushed: swapping airplanes after finding problems and trying to complete the flight in time for my student to get to work, etc. We were cleared to taxi to runway 24 at taxiway G and we held short for our run-up and pre takeoff checks. The student was taking a long time to accomplish the checklist and we had another aircraft waiting. Tower asked us how long we'd be. We said we were ready. We were cleared into position and hold, which we did. My student thought he had a malfunction with the door lock, but it was working properly. The other aircraft taxied into position behind us. I heard tower talking to an aircraft on final for our runway and checked with tower whether or not we were cleared to go. At that moment, the radio on the aircraft failed. I was troubleshooting the radio when I heard,
