Narrative:

Taxi clearance misunderstood -- thought clearance was 'taxi taxiway Y, cross taxiway a, hold short of runway 8L. Aircraft crossed taxiway a on taxiway Y, far enough that no turn could be made, blocking taxiway Y. Clearance was apparently 'taxi taxiway y-a, hold short of runway 8L.' 2 routes primarily used. Normally when holding short of runway 8L on taxiway Y, we could expect to taxi on taxiway B to runway 8R. And when taxiing taxiway y-a an additional instruction to hold short runway 8L at or on 'rb' intersection is issued. Though no excursions were made or noted by controller, he was noticeably upset and distraction.

CLRNC WAS APPARENTLY 'TAXI TXWY Y-A, HOLD SHORT OF RWY 8L.' 2 ROUTES PRIMARILY USED. NORMALLY WHEN HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 8L ON TXWY Y, WE COULD EXPECT TO TAXI ON TXWY B TO RWY 8R. AND WHEN TAXIING TXWY Y-A AN ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTION TO HOLD SHORT RWY 8L AT OR ON 'RB' INTXN IS ISSUED. THOUGH NO EXCURSIONS WERE MADE OR NOTED BY CTLR, HE WAS NOTICEABLY UPSET AND DISTR.
