Narrative:
Cleared for VOR runway 1 approach. I elected to proceed to VOR for 'pt' rather than fly the 10 DME arc. After passing the arc, ATC advised us that we were required to turn on arc because it was our first IAF. I was under the impression that unless specified, I had a choice. At this point, we had the runway in sight, as planned, and canceled IFR. Supplemental information from acn 585676: an arc is provided for our direction of flight on a victor airway we continued inbound to the VOR instead of joining the arc at the IAF.

Narrative: CLRED FOR VOR RWY 1 APCH.
