Narrative:
Cleared for takeoff runway 32L at ord. Captain was flying. Called for autothrottle armed and engaged the EPR. Planned EPR was 1.61. Both engines advanced normally to 1.61 and then the left engine rolled back to 1.5 EPR and then surged back to 1.61 then back to 1.5 and back to 1.60. Captain aborted at 85 KTS and automatic brakes engaged. Exited the runway and looked at the brake cooling chart. Determined safe to return to the gate.
