Narrative:
After landing on runway 21L at lunken field (luk), I was cleared onto taxiway C via taxiway B to the terminal building with no hold short instructions. I crossed the approach end of runway 3L and continued on taxiway C to the intersection of runway 7. The yellow taxi line at the intersection split into 2 sections. One went straight ahead crossing runway 7 and the other went left on the approach end and then winding to the right to the ramp. I was notified by radio from ground control that I couldn't turn on to runway 7 without clearance. Since the taxi line traced the unusable section of runway 7 I didn't think I was in violation. I studied the airport diagram more closely and found that crossing directly over runway 7 would have been safer and more expeditious. What I think could help prevent a similar occurrence in this situation would be to install a sign with the word 'terminal' and an arrow pointing straight ahead crossing runway 7.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF C172 UTILIZED RWY 7 OVERRUN AS TXWY TO RAMP WHEN CLRED BY THE GND CTLR TO 'TAXI TO THE TERMINAL' AFTER LNDG. CTLR CONTENDS THAT CLRNC 'TO THE TERMINAL' ALLOWED A DIRECT XING OF INTERVENING RWYS, BUT DID NOT CONSTITUTE A CLRNC TO UTILIZE ANY PORTION OF SUCH RWY AS A TXWY ALONG ITS EXTENDED CTRLINE.
Narrative: AFTER LNDG ON RWY 21L AT LUNKEN FIELD (LUK), I WAS CLRED ONTO TXWY C VIA TXWY B TO THE TERMINAL BUILDING WITH NO HOLD SHORT INSTRUCTIONS. I CROSSED THE APCH END OF RWY 3L AND CONTINUED ON TXWY C TO THE INTXN OF RWY 7. THE YELLOW TAXI LINE AT THE INTXN SPLIT INTO 2 SECTIONS. ONE WENT STRAIGHT AHEAD XING RWY 7 AND THE OTHER WENT L ON THE APCH END AND THEN WINDING TO THE R TO THE RAMP. I WAS NOTIFIED BY RADIO FROM GND CTL THAT I COULDN'T TURN ON TO RWY 7 WITHOUT CLRNC. SINCE THE TAXI LINE TRACED THE UNUSABLE SECTION OF RWY 7 I DIDN'T THINK I WAS IN VIOLATION. I STUDIED THE ARPT DIAGRAM MORE CLOSELY AND FOUND THAT XING DIRECTLY OVER RWY 7 WOULD HAVE BEEN SAFER AND MORE EXPEDITIOUS. WHAT I THINK COULD HELP PREVENT A SIMILAR OCCURRENCE IN THIS SIT WOULD BE TO INSTALL A SIGN WITH THE WORD 'TERMINAL' AND AN ARROW POINTING STRAIGHT AHEAD XING RWY 7.
